Dear SCI Forum subscribers: Announcing the next SCI Forum: What: Wheelchair Skills: Getting the most from your manual or power wheelchair When: Tuesday, November 8, from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM Where: 4 West Rehab Gym Harborview Medical Center 325 Ninth Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104 For directions, go to http://sci.washington.edu/info/directions_forum_hmc.asp Learn the skills you need to successfully navigate your wheelchair in an array of situations and environments so you can more fully participate in the activities you enjoy. Using research studies, advice from ultralight wheelchair users, personal inpatient rehab experience, and video clips of wheelchair users, Harborview physical therapist Elisa Smith will provide practical tips on perfecting ultralight wheelchair skills, including wheelies for curbs and maneuvering in small restrooms, elevators, on gravel roads and escalators. Then, Harborview physical therapist Dave Colescott will discuss the skills needed to drive your power wheelchair in difficult situations, such as small spaces, around tight corners, over curbs, or up hills in the rain. Power wheelchair users will provide tips and demonstrations on conquering these challenges. Free parking will be provided for this event. [Scirehab-forum] Spinal Cord Injury Support and Information Group Thursday October 20
Individuals with spinal cord injuries and their family members and caregivers are invited to attend the next Spinal Cord Injury Support and Information Group, which will take place:
· Thursday, October 20, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm
· Harborview Medical Center (4-West Patient & Family Room, across from the nurses' station).
This is not a therapy group, but rather an opportunity to share stories and experiences, ask questions and get real-life answers. You can also just listen to fellow members of the spinal cord injury community.
Monthly Meetings at Harborview Medical Center:
· 3rd Thursday of each month
· 12:30 to 1:30 pm
· 4-West Patient & Family Room (across from the nurses' station)

Don’t forget to register for the 2011 Spinal Cord Injury Wellness Summit that takes place on Saturday, October 22.
What: 2011 Spinal Cord Injury Wellness Summit
A free half-day educational program for individuals with spinal cord injuries, family members, caregivers and health professionals.
When: Saturday, October 22, 2011, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.
Where: South Campus Center, 3rd Floor
University of Washington

(Note: parking on UW campus is free after 12 noon.)

Whether you are recently injured or have a long-standing spinal cord injury, this half-day educational program will provide information and resources that can help you stay healthy and live well with a spinal cord injury. Family members, caregivers and health care providers are also welcome to attend. There will be several presentations to choose from—including talks on pain, spasticity, sexual health, employment and recreation—all given by experts from the UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. Refreshments will be available.
· Certificates for continuing education hours will be available for physical and occupational therapists.
