What: Pressure ulcers can wreck your life! (At least for a while.) Preventing and managing skin problems after spinal cord injury. By Deborah Crane, MD, MPH, UW Rehabilitation Medicine Physician, and Beth Hall, RNC, Certified Wound Care Nurse, Harborview Medical Center. Pressure ulcers are a serious and scary matter. This presentation will illustrate why you should care about pressure ulcers and the potential consequences of developing one. We will review the risk factors and common causes of skin breakdown after spinal cord injury. As we discuss the early signs of skin trouble, you will learn what to do if you think you are developing a pressure ulcer. Our wound care nurse will explain appropriate treatments for ulcers of different stages. We will highlight specific things that you and your support system can do to help prevent a pressure ulcer from happening to you. In addition, an individual with SCI will share his experiences with pressure ulcers, including treatment, recovery and ongoing management. CEU credits available: 1.5 contact hours.
