Dear SCI Forum subscribers: Announcing the next SCI Forum: When: Tuesday, February 14, from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM Where: South Campus Center, Room 316 University of Washington 1601 NE Columbia Rd., Seattle, WA 98195 For directions, go to http://sci.washington.edu/info/directions_forum_SCC.asp. Topic: Sleep Problems and Sleep Apnea in Persons with Spinal Cord Injury By Don Fogelberg, PhD, assistant professor, UW Rehabilitation Medicine and Stephen Burns, MD, associate professor, UW Rehabilitation Medicine and acting director, SCI Service, VA Puget Sound Health Care System. Many people with spinal cord injuries have trouble getting a good night’s sleep. Pain, breathing difficulties, and the need for care periodically through the night often disrupt sleep. Poor sleep quality can have many negative effects on daily life, such as being too sleepy during the day, having trouble concentrating or thinking, interfering with self care and health maintenance, and becoming depressed. Sleep apnea is very common in people with SCI and can have serious health consequences, such as heart disease and even death. This presentation will review the causes and consequences of sleep problems, including a detailed discussion of sleep apnea, and will explain treatments that can improve your health and well-being. In addition, an individual with a spinal cord injury will talk about his personal experience with sleep apnea and its treatment. CEU credits available for PTs and OTs: 1.5 contact hours. Certificates will be provided.
